World Anti-Doping Agency Accuses Kenya of Non-Co
Nairobi, Kenya — The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has formally accused Kenya of non-compliance with global anti-doping regulations, raising serious concerns about the country's oversight of drug use in athletics.
In a statement released Tuesday, WADA said Kenya’s Anti-Doping Agency (ADAK) had failed to meet key requirements under the World Anti-Doping Code, potentially putting the country's athletes at risk of sanctions on the international stage.
“Kenya has not fully implemented corrective actions agreed upon following previous audits,” WADA said. “These ongoing failures undermine the integrity of clean sport and breach Kenya’s obligations as a signatory to the Code.”
Kenya, long considered a powerhouse in distance running, has faced growing scrutiny in recent years over a surge in doping violations among elite athletes. More than 60 Kenyan runners have been sanctioned since 2022, prompting calls for stronger enforcement and systemic reforms.
The latest move by WADA could lead to significant consequences, including a potential ban on Kenyan athletes competing under the national flag at international competitions such as the Olympics or World Championships.
ADAK has not yet issued an official response to the non-compliance notice, but government officials have previously pledged to crack down on doping and bolster regulatory capacity.
Sports analysts say the accusation is a serious blow to Kenya’s sporting reputation and could impact its bid to host future international events.
WADA has given Kenya a deadline to respond and take corrective action or face referral to its Compliance Review Committee, which could recommend further sanctions.
The situation remains fluid, with athletes, fans, and officials anxiously awaiting the country's next move.
