São Tomé and Príncipe Pledges to Establish Network of Marine Protected Areas
São Tomé – The government of São Tomé and Príncipe has announced a bold commitment to establish a network of marine protected areas (MPAs), aiming to safeguard the island nation's rich marine biodiversity and strengthen climate resilience.
The pledge, unveiled during a regional environmental summit this week, marks a significant step forward in ocean conservation efforts across the Gulf of Guinea. Authorities say the planned MPA network will cover key coastal and offshore ecosystems, including critical habitats for fish, sea turtles, and migratory birds.
“With this commitment, we are taking a decisive step to protect our natural heritage and ensure the long-term sustainability of our marine resources,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Environment and Biodiversity. “Our oceans are central to our livelihoods, food security, and identity.”
São Tomé and Príncipe’s coastal communities rely heavily on small-scale fishing, which has come under increasing pressure from overfishing, habitat degradation, and the impacts of climate change. The new protected areas are expected to promote marine regeneration, support sustainable fisheries, and open opportunities for eco-tourism.
The initiative is being supported by international conservation organizations and regional partners, who have praised the country’s leadership on marine stewardship. Implementation will include scientific mapping, community consultations, and legal frameworks to ensure effective management.
Environmental groups say the move positions São Tomé and Príncipe as a regional leader in marine conservation and contributes to global goals to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
