Mozambique Backs $6 Billion Electricity Project, Southern Africa’s Largest in Half a Century

Maputo, Mozambique — Mozambique has officially endorsed a $6 billion electricity infrastructure project that is set to become the largest of its kind in southern Africa in the past 50 years, signaling a major step forward in the region’s energy and economic development.

Announced this week by the Ministry of Energy, the ambitious initiative aims to significantly expand power generation and transmission capacity across Mozambique and its neighboring countries. The project will be developed in partnership with international investors and regional stakeholders, with construction expected to begin in 2026.

“This is a transformative moment for Mozambique and for the entire southern African region,” said Energy Minister Carlos Zacarias. “The project will not only boost domestic energy supply but also position Mozambique as a key regional power exporter.”

The massive undertaking includes the construction of high-voltage transmission lines, sub-stations, and new renewable and thermal power plants. Once completed, it is expected to deliver electricity to millions of people in underserved communities and drive industrial growth.

The project is part of Mozambique’s long-term strategy to harness its vast energy resources, including hydropower, natural gas, and renewables; while addressing chronic electricity shortages that have hampered development.

Regional partners within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) have expressed strong support, viewing the project as vital to enhancing energy security and economic integration across the region.

International financing institutions, including the World Bank and African Development Bank, are reportedly in discussions to back the initiative.

The project is expected to be rolled out in phases, with full completion targeted for the early 2030s.
