Liberia Sets Sights on Global Cocoa Market with Ambitious Expansion Plans
Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia is ramping up efforts to position itself as a competitive player in the global cocoa market, unveiling plans to expand production, improve quality standards, and attract international buyers.
The West African nation, historically overshadowed by neighboring cocoa giants like Ivory Coast and Ghana, is seeking to revitalize its cocoa industry as a key driver of economic growth and rural development.
Government officials, in partnership with international development agencies and private sector stakeholders, are investing in farmer training, sustainable farming practices, and improved infrastructure to boost both yields and export readiness.
“Our goal is to move beyond subsistence farming and become a recognized supplier of high-quality, sustainably grown cocoa,” said a spokesperson from Liberia’s Ministry of Agriculture. “We see significant potential to tap into global demand, particularly for ethically sourced products.”
Liberia’s cocoa sector currently contributes a small fraction to global supply, but experts say the country’s fertile land and favorable climate offer untapped potential. Efforts are also underway to ensure traceability and compliance with international standards, appealing to premium markets in Europe and North America.
With the global chocolate industry increasingly prioritizing sustainability and ethical sourcing, Liberia’s renewed focus on cocoa could position it as an emerging origin of choice for buyers seeking both quality and impact.
