Boko Haram Kills Dozens in Brutal ‘House-to-House’ Attack in Northeast Nigeria, Residents Say
Maiduguri, Nigeria — Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed dozens of people in a brutal “house-to-house” attack on a village in northeastern Nigeria, according to local residents and community leaders.
The assault took place late Tuesday in the remote community of Gurokayeya, near the border between Borno and Yobe states, a region long plagued by Islamist insurgency.
Witnesses said heavily armed militants stormed the village under the cover of darkness, going from home to home and executing residents. At least 40 people are feared dead, though the exact toll remains unclear due to limited access and ongoing security concerns.
“They came silently and began knocking on doors. If a man opened, they dragged him out and shot him,” said one resident, who fled to a nearby town and spoke on condition of anonymity. “It was pure terror. We are still counting the dead.”
Local security officials have not yet issued an official statement, but military sources confirmed that reinforcements have been deployed to the area. Emergency responders are also working to assist survivors and assess the full scale of the attack.
Boko Haram, along with its rival faction Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has waged a violent insurgency in northeastern Nigeria for more than a decade, displacing millions and killing over 35,000 people, according to the United Nations.
The latest attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing the region, despite repeated government claims that the militant threat has been significantly weakened.
This is a developing story.
