Benin: Former President Boni Yayi Rules Out Return to Power
Cotonou, Benin — Former Beninese President Thomas Boni Yayi has announced he will not seek a return to political power, ending speculation about a potential comeback ahead of upcoming national elections.
In a public statement issued on Tuesday, Boni Yayi, who led the West African nation from 2006 to 2016, said his focus would remain on promoting democracy, peace, and good governance, rather than pursuing another term in office.
“I have served my country to the best of my ability,” he said. “My commitment now is to support a new generation of leaders and to work for the unity and development of Benin.”
The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions in Benin, where critics have accused the current administration of shrinking democratic space. Boni Yayi has in recent years emerged as a vocal opposition figure, particularly following the controversial 2019 parliamentary elections that excluded opposition parties from the ballot.
While some supporters had hoped for his return to frontline politics, others say his decision paves the way for new leadership within the opposition.
Political analysts note that Boni Yayi’s continued influence—especially as former leader of the opposition FCBE party and a regional statesman—could still shape the political landscape, even from outside elected office.
With presidential elections scheduled for 2026, attention is now turning to who will emerge as the key challengers in what is expected to be a closely watched race.
