Africa a 'Hotspot' in Global Climate Crisis, Says New Report

Nairobi, Kenya – Africa has emerged as one of the most vulnerable regions in the global climate emergency, according to the State of Africa’s Environment 2025, the latest edition of the annual publication released by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

The report paints a stark picture of the continent’s escalating environmental challenges, describing Africa as a “hotspot” where the impacts of climate change—rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and intensifying natural disasters—are converging with social and economic vulnerabilities.

Released on the sidelines of a regional environmental forum, the report highlights how the continent’s ecosystems, food systems, and water resources are under increasing strain, while adaptation measures remain underfunded and under-prioritized.

“Africa is on the frontline of a crisis it did not cause,” said Sunita Narain, Director General of CSE. “The countries of this continent contribute the least to global emissions, yet they are bearing the brunt of climate-induced losses.”

The report warns that if urgent and equitable action is not taken, climate impacts could deepen poverty, fuel migration, and trigger conflicts over scarce resources. It also calls for increased global climate finance, stronger regional cooperation, and greater investment in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

Environmental experts say the findings underscore the need for Africa to play a more central role in global climate negotiations ahead of COP30, while pushing for climate justice and accountability from high-emitting nations.

The State of Africa’s Environment 2025 serves as a key reference for policymakers, researchers, and civil society groups tracking the continent’s environmental health and climate resilience.
